She had no desire to meet or marry the prince at the ball. Kept inside her whole life, she had no desire to leave it even when she is able to do so. Clara, who turns into Cinderella, chooses her life of ashes. The characters are all interesting because in a lot of ways their personalities are unexpected. This actually works well because throughout the book she is constantly told by Caspar and the Master that she LOOKS and she sees. It's Iris who comments on everyone and seems to be able to see everyone. We're presented with the main character looking back on her life, presumable Iris because we get Iris's inner thoughts throughout the book. Wicked was awful but I really liked Confessions. I think that Maguire is a hit or miss author. Review: This is the second time that I've read this book and, while I did enjoy it, I think I enjoyed it more the first time. Iris seems to find all sorts of magical beings in this house but is it magic or just her imagination? What happens when the plants that makes her family rich are the same ones that bring them to ruin? She is also the most beautiful girl that anyone has seen and is the daughter of a wealthy family. There, Iris is hired to teach English to Clara, a little girl that hasn't been outside for most of her life and is the talk of the town. Summary: Iris and her sister Ruth are taken to Holland by their mother after having to flee England. Title: Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire
